whistling vivaldi posterIn 2010-2011 the college began a courageous conversation about stereotypes and how they affect our work with each other – as teachers, staff, managers and students. The goal of this project is to help each of us achieve to our full potential and to build relationships that will help narrow the achievement gap at our college. The college will continue its work on this issue with a focus on mentoring in 2011-2012.

The Project was inspired by the book Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us by Claude Steele

Not in Our Town: When Hate Happens Here
This hour-long documentary looks at five Northern California communities dealing with deadly hate violence over a five-year period. Together, the stories reveal that whether the motivation is racism, anti-Semitism, gender or sexual orientation, hate is the same. But community members are finding innovative ways to respond when hate happens here.

Diversity Film Series at the Contra Costa Crisis Center

An award winning documentary about the children at Stanton Elementary School in inner city Philadelphia, where all its students are African American and 90% are below the poverty line. The principal sees herself in the primary role of gathering gifts from the community. There is an overwhelming reality of poverty and family dysfunction but strong moments of hope and promise.

Not in Our Town: Light in the Darkness
This documentary tells the story of residents of a Long Island village taking action after a local immigrant is killed in a hate crime attack by seven teenagers. While starkly revealing the trauma of hate, the film provides a blueprint for people who want to do something before intolerance turns to violence.

The Online Penalty: Latino Student Outcomes in Online Classes

Come see results from a mixed-methods study about the impact of online instruction on the Latino-white achievement gap, including Latino students' perspectives. A quantitative analysis of over 4 million California community college student records revealed an "online penalty" that is most dramatic for Latinos. Interviews with Latino students explored sociocultural issues related to online instructional programs.

Attendance at any event will earn faculty flex credit.

Dave Iverson interviews social psychologist Claude Steele, provost at Columbia University, former professor at Stanford and author of Whistling Vivaldi, on KQED’s Forum program. “Stereotype threat," being in a situation where a negative stereotype about your group could apply, pervades American life, according to professor Steele.

Bay Area African-Americans Examine 'State of the Race'

A group of Bay Area non-profits, businesses and African-American leaders will gather for a "State of the Race" convention to discuss strategies to improve the quality of life and economic status of local African-Americans. The meeting follows the release of data indicating high levels of economic distress and Black population flight from some Bay Area cities.


Reducingstereotypethreat.org was created by two social psychologists as a resource for faculty, teachers, students, and the general public interested in the phenomenon of stereotype threat. This website offers summaries of research on stereotype threat and discusses unresolved issues and controversies in the research literature. Included are some research-based suggestions for reducing the negative consequences of stereotyping, particularly in academic settings.
