Financial aid and resources for the unemployed

If you are currently unemployed and interested in going back to college to receive retraining, pursue your first Bachelors degree, or seeking to explore an entirely new career, please find the information below to help you get started to see if you'll be eligible for financial aid.

Step 1: Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
You can access the FAFSA by going to their website at www.fafsa.ed.gov and completing the application for the current academic year. They will need your income information from the past year (i.e. if applying for 12-13 academic year, they want your Federal 2011 tax transcript). If you were recently laid off or lost your job, still provide your income tax information from the previous year even though it may not be reflective of your current income information.

Step 2: You will receive an email from the Financial Aid Office in your DVC InSite Portal Email Account
This email will tell you whether you are eligible or not eligible for financial aid at DVC. If you are eligible, the email will tell you that you need to provide documentation to verify the information provided in your FAFSA and/or submit additional documentation that will help complete your financial aid file. If you are not eligible based on your income from last year, but this year your income has drastically changed due to loss of employment, then proceed to the Financial Aid Office to pick up a Reduction of Income form. This will get the process started to take into consideration your current income situation rather than last year's income information.

Step 3: Submit all documentation and complete all steps
You will need to submit ALL the proper documentation in the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. Processing of your files takes at least 20 business days. Financial Aid IS a process. Please plan accordingly.

Step 4: You will receive an Award Letter via your DVC InSite Portal Email Account
If your paperwork is complete and the information/documentation provided matches up with the information on your FAFSA, your file will be complete. At this point, you will receive an Award Letter in your DVC InSite Portal email letting you know how much you are eligible for and when to expect your check.

Step 5. You will receive your check
You will receive your check at the next disbursement date after your file has been completed.
