Computer Assisted Learning in LC 105 - Software

No computer experience necessary. No appointment necessary. Just come in during our hours and our staff will load the software and show you how to use it to improve your English skills.

GENERAL INTEREST

THE OXFORD PICTURE DICTIONARY — an interactive dictionary that includes sound and animation to facilitate user comprehension. We recommend this program for ESL levels 67-78.

GRAMMAR

FOCUS ON GRAMMAR — provides extensive grammar practice through a great variety of reading, writing and listening activities. We recommend this program for ESL Levels 76-98A.

PRONUNCIATION AND ESL

AMERICAN SPEECHSOUNDS — comprehensive software includes a guide for 30 language backgrounds. Create customized content based on your individual needs. We recommend this program for all ESL levels.

ROSETTA STONE — three levels, including basic lessons in listening, pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structure. We recommend this program for all ESL levels.

READING COMPREHENSION

DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS — questions to test readers’ skills at thinking critically and making inferences. Also offers games to reinforce reading concepts. We recommend this program for ESL levels 76-98A.

KURZWEIL 3000 — provides students with assistance in reading, writing and study skills. Features are designed to support students at every stage of the reading and writing process.

SPELLING

SPELLING FUSION — an interactive program that teaches and tests the spelling of singular and plural forms of over 3500 English words. We recommend this program for all levels of ESL and Native English speakers.

VOCABULARY

VOCABULARY STRETCH — enriches vocabulary through a variety of activities. Initially assesses vocabulary level and allows students to track their progress. We recommend this program for intermediate to advanced ESL, Basic Skills and Developmental Education students.

TEST PREPARATION

TOEFL PRACTICE TEST — focuses on the four parts of the Toefl iBT test: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking. Program scores all but the writing test to allow students to view their progress. We recommend this program for any student studying for the Toefl Exam.

TYPING

MAVIS BEACON TEACHES TYPING — diagnostics, lessons, games and evaluations. Get your typing/keyboarding skills up to speed. We recommend this program for all levels of students.

WRITING

WRITER’S RESOURCES — covers basic grammar skills, sentence, paragraph and essay construction, and traditional rhetorical patterns. We recommend this program for all levels of developing writers.

DISABILITY SUPPORT

JAWS 11.0 — (Job Access With Speech) provides blind and visually impaired students with access to Internet Explorer and computer programs through text-to-speech and allows for full keyboard interaction. It also features optional Braille output for additional support.

KURZWEIL 3000 — provides students with assistance in reading, writing and study skills. Features are designed to support students at every stage of the reading and writing process.


Resources: The materials listed on this page will provide English as a second language students with practice in English pronunciation. Consider any of the following materials located in LC105. Additionally, be sure to check the software on the computers in LC105, such as software aimed at English pronunciation improvement.
